Pooch Food : Beefy Pooch Cake

I’ve mentioned in a previous post that I’ll be trying out a new recipe to bake a birthday cake suitable for dogs.  The initial plan was to bake a single layer instead of the double layer the recipe calls for, but after some contemplation, I decided to go ahead with the full works the night before the gathering instead of a trial baking session first.

The cakes came out looking decent enough, but I really can’t say the same for the yogurt frosting.  I can’t frost a cake for nuts, which is why I’m attending cake-baking classes!

Pooch Food - Beefy Pooch Cake

Beefy Pooch Cake
3 cups all purpose flour
1 tbsp baking powder
1/2 cup margarine, softened
6 eggs, beaten
1/2 cup corn oil
250g beef, minced
2 cup carrot, shredded
plain yogurt
2-3 strips of fried bacon (or jerky strips)

  1. Preheat oven to 160°C.
  2. Generously grease and flour 2 8-inc round cake pans.  Set aside.
  3. Sieve the flour and baking powder.  Set aside.
  4. In a large mixing bowl, beat the margarine until smooth.
  5. Gradually add in the eggs and corn oil.  Mix well.
  6. Add in the minced beef and shredded carrots and mix until smooth.
  7. Gradually add in the flour mixture and mix thoroughly.
  8. Pour the batter into the 2 prepared pans.
  9. Bake for 60 minutes.
  10. Let cool for a few minutes before removing from pans.
  11. Cool cakes completely on wire rack.
  12. Place one layer of cooled cake on a serving plate and spread yogurt over the top.  Place the second layer over the first, then spread yogurt over the top and on the sides of the entire cake.
  13. Sprinkle crumbled bacon or bits of jerky strips over the top.

Yield : 1 double-layer 8-inch dia. cake

I know for a fact that it tastes good!  My two golden retrievers chose this cake over the other commercial cake available at the gathering.  I suspect it’s because this cake is meat based, while the other is not.
