Sponge/Lady Fingers
Lady Fingers are not the same as Lady’s Fingers. Most of us Singaporeans who went through the MOE-controlled syllabus should be very familiar with Lady’s Fingers even if we don’t eat them. We used them during art classes for their cross-sectional design, and we planted them during our Primary 4 science classes.
Now, if you use Lady’s Fingers in your tiramisu, I’m afraid you will have a rather strange tasting (and looking as well!) tiramisu, I assure you.
Lady Fingers, otherwise known as Sponge Fingers or ‘Savoiardi’ (in Italian), are sweet, little, finger-shaped sponge cakes. They are available commercially, or you can bake them from scratch if you wish. The ones available in Singapore are usually sugar-coated on one side, although traditionally, lady fingers are not sugar-coated. I have not baked them from scratch before, for I deem it too much of a hassle since I only use them when I make tiramisus.
Those found on the shelves in the supermarkets is adequate for my needs. At the moment, that is. Who knows what the future might hold for me.
Evan, this is for you…

I usually buy mine from Cold Storage, but I spotted them at NTUC Hougang Green just now. I’m not sure if all NTUC outlets stock up on the sponge fingers though.

Saw this at IMM Giant too! @ S$3.80 per pack.
That’s expensive! Both Cold Storage and NTUC are selling it for $2.80 per pack.
awwwww sweet. thx dear *hugs*
$3.80 from giant? unbelievable! i mean, giant is such a cheapo place that mostly brings in malaysian products. cant believe its more expensive than cold storage. what they doing, trying to carve a bad name for themselves? fancy selling at a dollar more.
No problem, Evan.
Hehe… I’m surprised that Giant sells it at $3.80 too. Speaking of which, I’ve heard that Daiso sells some baking equipment and stuff at really cheap prices. It’s time I make a trip down to IMM, which is soooo far from where I stay.
CY, be very “selective” of what u buy in daiso. despite being a big fan myself, some of their stuffs are not exactly cheap. well, a clear folder with 48 pages or a nice ceramic bowl is indeed cheap at $2. but a 16 piping bags isnt when i got 100pcs for $4 at phoon huat. see the diff? so i guess they kinda do a “balancing act” by selling stuffs that are less worthy than 2 bucks, and when ppl buy them, it kinda covers up for those that are worth your 2 bucks. nevertheless, its a good place to shop. lotsa stuffs and i always spend at least $50 there, unconsciously, that is. hehe. i love their cha soba, which is really nice and tasty. can serve 4. if u buy from NTUC, its such a small packet at $3-4
anyway u drive right? so distance shdnt b a problem mah.
You may be pleased to know there’s a Daiso at Plaza Singapura? I’ve not been there yet…but will do so soon, hopefully they also carry baking equipment!
Gals, I’m sorry it’s S$2.80. Saw the same price @ NTUC today.
I’m a regular @ Daiso IMM cos work near there. Why dun u visit the one @ Plaza Singapure, just open 2 days ago
Evan: Thanks for the advice. I will try to be more discerning when I visit Daiso. The keyword here is ‘try’. I’m afraid I’ll spend a lot more than $50 from the way you describe it.
Luna Esa: Thanks for the piece of news. I just found out they have a branch at PS too. Will drop by when I have the time.
Elyn: Hehe… so everywhere they are selling it at $2.80. I was quite puzzled initially when you said Giant is selling at $3.80, coz Cold Storage and Giant are under the same management actually. Yes yes… I will visit Daiso PS soon.
Hi Cadenze,
Your tiramisu looks really good, would be nice to have a slice
Thanks Angie for your compliments.

I love Daiso too! but haven’t been to the s’pore ones yet. Next time we go tog?
Wah… both of us shop together… dangerous! Hahhaa…
hi dear, i couldn’t find this at causeway point & north point cold storage! Fed up! will try to look for it at westmall shop & save and NTUC too. btw, the other one is the tiramisu u made? it looks nice!
Hi wenwenzz,
Yes, I made that tiramisu. Thanks.
Were you looking at the right section? It should be with the biscuits.
Good luck in your search.
