Matcha Cookies

What happens on a ‘happening’ Friday night when the hubby abandons the poor wife and two dogs to go enjoy himself outside? Tit for tat? Nah… the wife finds a nice recipe which uses her favourite ingredient to occupy her time. :)

I googled, and found a simple and sweet recipe.  There’s only a slight problem; I now have 3 strawberry sweethearts in the refrigerator for tomorrow’s orders, and space is simply not available.  Unless I unmold the cakes and stack them up into boxes.

Matcha Cookies

Matcha Cookies
180g all-purpose flour
20g matcha
160g butter, room temperature
100g sugar
1 egg
50g sliced almonds

  1. Sift together the flour and matcha in a medium bowl.  Set aside.
  2. In a large bowl, beat the butter until smooth.
  3. Add in the sugar and beat until light and fluffy.
  4. Add in the egg and beat until well-incorporated.
  5. Stir in the sifted dry ingredients by hand until the dough is smooth
  6. Stir in the almonds gently till well-distributed.
  7. Shape dough into two rolls with the help of plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight.
  8. Preheat oven to 180°C.
  9. Line a baking sheet with baking paper.
  10. Remove dough from refrigerator and slice thinly (about 5mm) before placing on baking sheet.
  11. Bake for 12-15 minutes, one tray at a time.
  12. Transfer to wire rack to cool completely.

Yield : 15 cookies

I halved the recipe because I couldn’t bear to use too much of the expensive matcha I bought in Japan.  I’d rather leave them for drinking, you see. :P

And so, since I didn’t manage to squeeze out some space from the refrigerator to house the dough for a couple of hours, I put in the freezer for about 45 minutes .  And boy, was it a right decision!  I’m really bad with words, so all I can say is, the cookies were fabulously fantastic and delicious.  I was contemplating between having a cup of green tea or earl grey to go with the cookies, and my common sense ruled out the former lest an overkill of my senses with the taste of matcha.  But, I went with my heart and brewed a cup of green tea to go with my matcha cookies.

And what a combination!  Contrary to what I thought should happen, it heightened the whole matcha experience instead of dousing it.

But, it’s not a recipe I’m keen to revisit anytime soon.  It uses up too much of my precious matcha.

(Eunice the green-tea lover , if you want to try these matcha cookies, MSN and let me know ok?  We stay near each other, so letting you try some is not a problem at all. :) )

  1. This looks good but I don’t know what Matcha is and doubt very much I can get it in UK.
It is obviously a vital ingredient in this cookie?
I noticed your previous post and just want to thank you for this blog and I know it is a lot of work maintaining a blog and sharing recipes.
    God bless.

  2. Hi Judy,

Matcha is actually green tea powder, traditionally used in Japanese Tea Ceremonies but is available in Japanese supermarkets here in Singapore. There are lower grades selling in our locak baking ingredients stores but they don’t smell and taste as good. I’m really not sure if they are available in UK, and if they are, I’m sure they are quite expensive.

I’m sorry, matcha is a main ingredient in this recipe but I was just toying with the idea and wondering if the recipe would still work if replace with cinnamon powder or almond meal. :)

Thank you for your kind words. It’s friends I make on the blog like yourself which makes blogging a wonderful experience.

    Warmest regards,
    Cadenze

  3. Thanks for your reply to my comment. I tried looking for Matcha in town today at one of the Health food shops but nothing there.

  4. Could tell you’re really a lover of green tea! :) Will it taste bitter?

  5. Hi Judy, what a pity! Do you have relatives living in Asia who could possibly air-mail it to you?

Hi Elyn, yes I am such a fan of green tea! Nope, it didn’t taste bitter at all.

  6. Knight

hi there…do you have any idea where i can get macha powder in Singapore???
I’ve try Phoon Huat, but all they have is a small bottle of green tea baking powder…
    or is that the wan???
Hope to hear from you soon…cheers.

  7. Hi Knight,

Yes, the small bottle you managed to located at PH can be used, but I didn’t quite like the taste of it.

Another source you may want to consider is Genki Sushi (they sell matcha powder) or the Meiji Supermarket at within Daimaru at Liang Court.

    Hope it helps. :)
